The UIXR Studio (VR Club) Auditions Announcement for Fall 2022

Are you interested in learning more about Virtual Reality Performances? The UIXR Studio (VR Club) is looking for performers to participate in the creation of Virtual Reality Theatre. This is part of the NEXT Stages: Novel Environments for Extended Theatre research project funded by UI OVPR Jumpstart grant.

The play takes place in a surreal desert world where the environment has been destroyed by a series of actions that were believed to be small and inconsequential. Now, the world’s original inhabitants lead the audience on a quest to repair the environment and create a flourishing new reality. This is a devised process where the research team is building the story, technology, and experience collaboratively. We are seeking performers who are comfortable working in this type of process. Our ideal collaborator will:

  • Have a movement background

  • Have a curiosity about performing with technology (motion and facial capture)

  • Be comfortable with heightened language

  • Be comfortable improvising with remote audiences who are in the shared VR world

  • Be adept with youth audiences

Auditions will be submitted as a video upload between May 1 - May 7.

Callbacks will be live via Zoom, Tuesday May 17 between 7-10p CST.

For Generals, you will upload a video of a contemporary monologue no more than a minute and half.  There are two ways to audition:

  1. If you are planning on auditioning for Children’s Hour in the theatre department, we will view your submission for that audition.

  2. If you are not planning on auditioning for Children’s Hour, please submit a video to this link: Please include your contact information with your video, so we can be in touch.

If you do not have access to videotaping yourself, on Saturday, May 7, there will be an opportunity to have your audition recorded in the theatre building with a department camera if you prefer.
